Overview
Electrical work is uniquely dangerous because the wrong glove can be the same as no glove. This guide covers what electricians actually need — and what looks like a glove but isn't safe for the job.
For live electrical work, use ASTM D120-rated dielectric rubber gloves (Class 00 to 4 depending on voltage) with leather protector gloves over them. For de-energized work, any dexterous work glove is fine. NEVER use ordinary work gloves, nitrile disposables, or leather gloves alone for live work.

ASTM D120 Class 0 Dielectric Gloves (1,000V)
The minimum standard for electricians working on circuits up to 480V (common industrial). Must be retested every 6 months.
ASTM D120 Class 2 Dielectric Gloves (17,000V)
For utility linemen and high-voltage work. Heavier and more cumbersome but lifesaving.
Leather Protector Gloves
Worn OVER dielectric gloves to prevent mechanical damage (cuts, punctures) that would compromise insulation.
Standard Work Gloves (Dexterous)
For low-voltage, de-energized work — wiring panels, installing outlets, data cabling. No electrical rating needed.
What to Look For
- ✓ ASTM D120 / IEC 60903 certification mark
- ✓ Right voltage class for the work — Class 0 minimum for typical commercial work
- ✓ Date of last electrical retest (must be within 6 months for in-service gloves)
- ✓ Visual inspection before each use — any cuts, punctures, or surface damage means retire
- ✓ Leather protectors worn OVER dielectric gloves, never alone
What to Avoid
- ✗ Ordinary work gloves (any kind) for live electrical work — they provide ZERO electrical protection
- ✗ Disposable nitrile or latex gloves for live work — same problem
- ✗ Using dielectric gloves without leather protectors — mechanical damage can compromise them silently
- ✗ Dielectric gloves older than 6 months since last test — the rubber degrades
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use leather gloves for electrical work?
No. Dry leather has very high electrical resistance and you might think you're safe, but leather absorbs moisture (sweat, humidity) which dramatically reduces its insulating properties. Only ASTM D120 dielectric rubber gloves are certified for live electrical work.
How often do electrician gloves need to be tested?
